The Prayer

The Prayer” is a popular song written by David Foster, Carole Bayer Sager, Alberto Testa and Tony Renis. It is most commonly known as a duet sung by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli – released on March 1, 1999. The song won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song from the 1998 film Quest for Camelot. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1999 and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2000.

It is odd that a song about a prayer, written by folk who are not necessarily associated with a spiritual life, would capture the imagination of pop culture. But perhaps, since the song is so well articulated, and sung so excellently, it could not fail to find it’s place in the lexicon of lyrics for our age.

May you enter into prayer, in its own words, “Let this be our prayer, just like every child; Need to find a place; Guide us with your grace; Give us faith so we’ll be safe.”

The Prayer

I pray you’ll be our eyes
And watch us where we go
And help us to be wise
In times when we don’t know

Let this be our prayer when we lose our way
Lead us to a place
Guide us with your grace
To a place where we’ll be safe

La luce che tu dai
I pray we’ll find your light
Nel cuore resterà
And hold it in our hearts

A ricordarci che
When stars go out each night
L’eterna stella sei

Nella mia preghiera
Let this be our prayer
Quanta fede c’ è
When shadows fill our day

Lead us to a place
Guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe

Sognamo un mondo senza più violenza
Un mondo di giustizia e di speranza
Ognuno dia la mano al suo vicino
Simbolo di pace e di fraternità

La forza che ci da
We ask that life be kind
Il desiderio che
And watch us from above

Ognuno trovi amor
We hope each soul will find
Intorno e dentro a sé
Another soul to love

Let this be our prayer
Let this be our prayer
Just like every child
Just like every child

Need to find a place
Guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe

E la fede che
Hai acceso in noi
Sento che ci salverà

About R.H. (Rusty) Foerger

As I enter the third third of life, I am becoming aware of the role of elders today “to enlarge spiritual vision, being devoted to prayer, living in the face of death, as a living curriculum of the Christian life” (Dr. James M. Houston). I am a life long and life wide learner who seeks to: *decipher the enigma of our worth *rescue from the agony of prayerlessness *integrate spiritual friendship.

I love this song. It was suppose to be played at my wedding. For some reason the sound people messed up and a completely different song ended up being played.
Hope you are well Rusty and enjoying your Spring.

    • Weddings are better remembered for what didn’t go according to plan, I suppose. Our wedding was delayed an hour… because the pianist forgot her sheet music. I am well and very well: a few hours ago my first grandchild was born! Spring has sprung!

My husband hates talking about some of the happenings of our wedding. That’s how bad some of it went, unfortunately.
In Brazil, weddings never start on time. It’s expected to not start on time. Haha.
Heyyyyy, congratulations grandpa. You must be super excited.
